Fare Increase 20th October 2025
Shiel Buses announce first fare increase since May 2023
- Many fares had been untouched since August 2023 with many held for much longer.
- Rising operational costs can no longer be absorbed so it is necessary to revisit our fares offering.
- Harmonisation of fares across core sections of overlapping services to address historical anomalies.
- Focus on encouraging and rewarding the switch to loyalty tickets.
- Continue to represent excellent value for money in comparison to alternative modes of transport.
Shiel Buses is announcing a range of fare changes across its network citing the impact of rising operational costs. These changes will come into effect on Monday 20th October 2025.
Whilst rates have increased on many fares, a number have been frozen with some reduced. Of note, value for money to our customers remains with a strong focus on loyalty tickets recognising those who regularly travel on our services. In addition, a necessary exercise of harmonising fares across overlapping sections of the network that addresses historical anomalies.
Managing Director David Phillips explained that “it was not a decision we have taken lightly" confirming the decision was made because the cost of running the bus services had significantly increased. Shiel Buses has tried to absorb the impact of increased operational costs including wages, materials and external labour. Increases in national insurance contributions and offering competitive rates to attract employees to and retain employees to this area are contributing factors. Where fares have increased, we still offer value with weekly tickets.
